Top 7 Mistakes You’re Making When Painting Kitchen Cabinets

We recently reviewed the top kitchen cabinet paints that we prefer to use and for this one we continue with the same topic. Painting kitchen cabinets is not the same as painting walls. It’s a whole different ball game. Firstly, working with wood requires a different level of care and attention. If one is not careful they might end up with a kitchen that looks horrible. In this article we take a look at some of the reasons why your kitchen cabinet makeover might be failing. Keep reading to find out more!

Using the Wrong Paint Color

As with paint for walls, there are so many options to choose from when it comes  to kitchen cabinet paint. That doesn’t mean that all colors will look the same. That and the fact that wood is not as forgiving as walls means you must be sure about what paint you want to use on your cabinets from the word go. That requires you to visualize not just the cabinets but the entire kitchen. Moreover to avoid unnecessary restarts you should test several color schemes to make sure that the one you’ve chosen will appear as you first thought.

Wrong Painting Technique

Don’t just pick up paint and begin coating your precious cabinet. Even if you have the right paint and the right tools for the job, you may end up with bad results. For instance you should never paint the face of the cabinets before you’ve painted the interior. Too many people complain that they can get a slick finish on their cabinets and the reason is quite simple- the begin by painting the front sides of their cabinets, which usually results in the finish losing its slickness when one mistakenly touches it.

You Lack Patience

While it’s completely understandable that you can’t wait to install your new cabinets, one of the worst mistakes to make is to attempt to install the painted cabinets before they’re dry. Again doing so will ensure that you don’t get a smooth finish on your precious cabinets as the paint will unfortunately smudge. It takes about fourteen days for kitchen cabinet paint to dry. Actually, it takes longer for it to actually cure, but by “dry”, we mean that when one touches it won’t smudge. It’s worth the time and money to be patient and let the cabinets dry!

Not Prepping Your Cabinets

Yes, doing it right can be time consuming, but the results will be worth it. That said, another error made by many people is forgetting or rather neglecting to clean their kitchen cabinets before painting. If one does not do so, the paint will not look slick as all the dirt and grime will show through. To clean kitchen cabinets all you require is a sponge and some mineral spirit. You must take your time to ensure that you get all the surfaces and the stains. Only then should you move on to the next step.

Handling The Cabinets Roughly When Reinstalling

As mentioned before, kitchen cabinets take quite long to dry and even longer to cure. That said even when they appear to be dry, there’s a chance that they still need more time. This means that one must be extra careful when reinstalling kitchen cabinets to avoid ruining the whole job. Even after installing the cabinets, care should be taken, as the paint could still be a long ways from completely drying. Repainting because of lack of care can be frustrating, not to mention that it is time consuming and unnecessarily expensive. Be patient.

Neglecting To Prime

Priming wood before painting not only prepares it, it also makes sure that one gets a better paint finish. Perhaps because there are so many steps in the painting process, many people neglect to prime before painting. As one primes the wood it’s important to do so with the gram of the wood, for best results. Keep in mind too that the primer usually takes around two hours to dry. If you do it right your cabinet paint finish will feel smoother and the color will appear better. Don’t skip this step!

You Forget To Label

When you begin painting, you’re bound to disassemble your cabinets. As you do so it’s important to label them, to make your work easier when reassembling them and refitting them. Not only does this save on time, it also reduces the chance of you smudging the paint, as you won’t over handle you’re drawers as you try to find the right fit. On the same not, you should store hinges and screws in containers and label them too. It saves on time and makes the whole process much more efficient and less taxing. When you disassemble your drawers, don’t forget to label!
